Dental managed care is different than medical care in many ways. Key among these differences include the relative cost of dental care compared to medical, the mindset from employers and employees that dental is a luxury nor is it a medical necessity, and the predominance of individual practice versus group practice.

The above differences together with local, state, and regional nuances affecting dental managed care have made it difficult to successfully build and maintain a national dental managed care presence.

The decade of the 90's provided a climate for some moderate success with dental HMO's. However, the beginning of the new millenium found dental HMOs scrambling to move toward the PPO model. The overwhelming majority of dental managed care in the US is in a handful of states. In other words, dental managed care is in the minority in most states.

For all of these reasons, coupled with GroupLink's strong philosophy of "freedom to choose" your dentist, we have limited our PPO options to those states where ample choice exists within a network. To that end, GroupLink has elected to partner with non-proprietary networks that provide sufficient numbers for choice. Existing within this philosophy is the economic reality that the deeper the discount, the fewer the participating providers. Consequently, the partnering PPOs of GroupLink were selected with a good balance of discounts, selection and quality standards.
